Life Events

   1. Matriculation: He matriculated on 17 Apr 1719. (1)

   2. He received a degree of B.A. on 21 Feb 1723 from the University of Oxford, Brasenose College. (2)

   3. He was ordained a Priest on 4 Jul 1725 in Eccleshall, Staffordshire. The Ordination was by Edward Charles, Bishop of Coventry and Lichfield. (3

   4. He was Curate of the Fradswell Chapel on 5 Jul 1725 in Colwich, Staffs.Concurrently he was also Curate of Milwich, Staffs.   (3)

   5. He received a degree of M.A. on 5 Jul 1726 from the University of Oxford,  Brasenose College. (4)

   6. He was a schoolmaster in 1729 in Drayton in Hales, Shropshire. (5) He was appointed on the resignation of the Chief Master, John Addenbroke.

   His most famous pupil was Robert Clive, afterwards Lord Clive of India.

   The following extract was found in the book "Lord Clive". " .......... His (Robert Clive's) school life commenced when he was very young at Dr. Eaton's  private school at Lostocke in Cheshire. At the age of eleven he was removed  to the care of the Rev. Mr. Burslem at Market Drayton with whom he remained  for few years.................." . In a book by George Forrest( The life  of Lord Clive, published by Cassell in 1918) there was the following reference " From Lostock, clive returned to Drayton, where he was placed  under the control of Mr. Burslem, the master of the grammar school, who was eminent in the Latin tongue" . Clive was ultimately expelled.

   7. In Sep 1730 he was Vicar in Drayton in Hales, Shropshire. His patron was Robert Corbett, Bart. (3)

   8. He was Rector 12 Jun 1735 to 8 Mar 1747 in Norton in Hales, Shropshire.  His patron was Rowland Cotton. (6)

    An article in the Antiquary Magazine describing the parish register of Norton - in - Hales has the following information:-

      "An inset, about post octavo in size, gives a list of the rectors. It was drawn up by the Rev. Lawrence Dundas Henry Cokbume, and the succeeding names were added by the  present rector. It will be observed that Joshua Bennion, 1650, does not  appear on the record :

   10. He was Vicar on 21 Nov 1747 in Etwall, Derbyshire. (3) His Patron was Rowland Cotton. (3)

   11. In 1758 he subscribed to Thoughts Moral and Divine (Second edn.), 1758,  CALCOTT, Wellins. Birmingham (7)

   12. In 1767 he Subscribed to The Thebaid of Statius, Translated Into English Verse, With Notes And Observations; And A Dissertation upon the whole by Way of Preface., 1767, LEWIS, William Lillington. Oxford. Printed At The Clarendon-Press. M DCC LXVII. (8)

   13. He was Master of Etwall Hospital in 1767 in Etwall, Derbyshire.
